I remember a time, not too long ago, when just about every video I saw shared in my social media feeds was about 6 seconds long.
Vine perfected the art of the extremely short form video.
Some of those videos were funny and I enjoyed watching the six second loop over and over again. Other videos were more annoying than they were funny and the six second loop was a good trigger to make me stab a fork in my eyes or ears or both.
After Instagram introduced their 15 second video and Snapchat became popular I stopped seeing so many Vine videos.
But today I noticed that #Vine was trending on Twitter and I was like, “whaaaa?”
A quick search made me realize that Vine was still a thing, and that Vine was no longer a thing. The Vine Company published a post on Medium announcing that they would be discontinuing the app.
To be honest, today was the first time I had thought about Vine in so long I can’t even remember when the last time I saw a Vine video was. To be fair though, I was never a user of the Vine app so it wasn’t always on my radar anyway.
I don’t like seeing any business, app, or project fail, but in todays world of technology sometimes what you have isn’t enough and other people create better things.
Hopefully everyone involved with Vine will move on to bigger and better things.
