I have been working hard on National Novel Writing Month for the past 27 days. And yesterday I won.
And this years NaNoWriMo is the best I have ever done. Even when I had won in the past the month did not go as well as this year’s did.
I did a pretty good job of getting a jump on the word count pace. I stayed ahead of pace every day, even when my daily word count did not get as high as I wanted it to.
That is a benefit of getting a big jump early. A good reason to start blocking November 1st as a holiday and dedicating the entire day to writing.
After a few days of almost falling behind, but barely staying ahead, I pounded out some big word count days. With the Thanksgiving weekend coming up I knew that I needed to get another good lead in case I could not write on Thursday or Friday.
I did end up writing on Thanksgiving day, but no words written on Friday and barely anything on Saturday. When I woke up on Sunday I was watching the Simpsons Marathon on FXX all morning and thought that I might not get any writing done then either.
I told myself that would be okay since I had the rest of the month of November off from my day job and plenty of time to finish. I was still on pace to finish on time and could easily finish all of my writing on Monday and Tuesday.
But I started doing some writing yesterday. In between stints watching the Simpsons. First getting my word count up to 46,666 so I would still be on pace. And then getting 1,000 words in for the day. And then getting 48,000 words total. And then 2,000 words for the day.
Before I knew it my total word count was 49,100. Just 900 words away from a NaNo Win. But this was right before The Walking Dead started. So I took a small break and watched the episode.
But I never planned to go to sleep after The Walking Dead. I needed to stay up until midnight so I could get opening night tickets to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
So while I waited for ticket sales to open up I typed some more words. Many more words.
When all was said and done I reached 4,382 words for the day. My biggest day this month and only the second time I broke 4,000 words this month. I validated at 50,629 words for the win, and I still have some story to go.
I planned on finishing the story today, but errands took a little longer than expected. I have about 500 words done today and probably 2 or 3 thousand more before the story ends. The novel will be 100% complete by November 30th and then December will be spent editing.
NaNoWriMo really gave me a boost this year. I finished a novel I have been brainstorming for a while now. And before long I will be working on the second book of the series.
